The town sits on the green lower slopes of Mount Meru, Tanzania's second-highest peak, with coffee farms and banana groves on its outskirts and a busy central market at its heart. Arusha National Park, just outside town, offers walking safaris, canoeing on the Momella Lakes, colobus monkeys in the forest and the climb up Meru itself.

The famous parks of the northern circuit are within reach. Tarangire is known for its great herds of elephants and its baobab trees, Lake Manyara for groundwater forest and flamingos, and the Ngorongoro Crater for its enclosed world of lions, rhinos and wildebeest on the crater floor. Beyond lies the Serengeti, where the Great Migration of wildebeest and zebra moves across the plains through the year.

Visits to Maasai villages, coffee plantations and nearby hot springs add variety, and local food centres on ugali, nyama choma, pilau rice and fresh fruit. The long dry season from June to October is classic safari time, with animals gathering near water; the short rains come late in the year, the long rains in spring, and early in the year the herds calve in the southern Serengeti.
