Khasab is the chief town of Musandam, a mountainous peninsula of Oman that is cut off from the rest of the country by the United Arab Emirates. It sits on a small bay on the northern coast of the peninsula, facing the Strait of Hormuz. Khasab Fort, a 17th-century fort built by the Portuguese and later used by Omani rulers, is now a museum of local life.

The coast is cut by deep inlets called khors, which have given Musandam the nickname the Norway of Arabia. Traditional wooden dhows take visitors through the fjords, past steep rock walls and fishing villages, with dolphins often swimming alongside. Inland, a road climbs Jebel Harim to cool mountain viewpoints, and the village of Kumzar, reached only by sea, has a language of its own.

Shuwa, lamb marinated in spices and slow-cooked in an underground oven, grilled fish, dates and halwa are the flavours of an Omani meal. Winters from November to March are mild and pleasant, and summers are extremely hot and humid. Cardamom coffee, poured from a long-spouted pot, finishes the meal.
