Salalah is the main city of Dhofar, in the far south of Oman, on a coastal plain between the Arabian Sea and a wall of hills. Coconut and banana plantations line the roads, an unusual sight on the Arabian Peninsula. The city was the birthplace of the late Sultan Qaboos, and a mosque bearing his name stands in the town. The Al Hafa souq sells frankincense and incense burners.

From about late June to early September the khareef, the monsoon, drapes the hills in mist and drizzle and turns them green, bringing the waterfalls and lake of Wadi Darbat to life. Nearby, Mughsail has a long beach with blowholes, and Al Baleed Archaeological Park and the Museum of the Land of Frankincense preserve the ruins of a medieval port. The Land of Frankincense is a World Heritage site, and includes the port of Sumhuram at Khor Rori.

Fresh seafood, such as grilled kingfish served with rice, is common along the coast, and roadside stalls sell coconut water, bananas and sweet halwa. Frankincense is chewed, burned and even left to soak in water. The khareef is cooler and humid, while summer elsewhere in Arabia is far hotter.
