The Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque is the city's showpiece, with a vast prayer hall, an enormous hand-woven carpet and a crystal chandelier, set among marble courtyards. In old Muscat, the colourful Al Alam Palace is flanked by the Portuguese-era forts of Jalali and Mirani, perched on rocks above the harbour.
Mutrah's corniche curves along the waterfront, and the Mutrah Souk behind it is a maze of frankincense, silver, textiles and spices. The Royal Opera House, the National Museum and the Bait Al Zubair museum show Oman's culture and history, while beaches and coves line the coast toward Qantab and Bandar Khayran.
Boat trips look for dolphins and reach the snorkelling reefs of the Daymaniyat Islands. Omani food features shuwa slow-cooked lamb, spiced rice, dates and cardamom coffee. The cooler months from about October to April are ideal, while summer is extremely hot. Nizwa's fort, the dunes of the Wahiba Sands and the wadis of the Hajar Mountains make memorable trips.
