Jerusalem stands among the Judean hills, about 750 metres above sea level, and its Old City, enclosed by Ottoman walls of the sixteenth century, is divided into Jewish, Christian, Muslim and Armenian quarters. The Western Wall, the Dome of the Rock with its golden dome, and the Church of the Holy Sepulchre lie within a short walk of each other, and the Old City is listed by UNESCO.
The Via Dolorosa, the route of the Passion, runs through the Muslim quarter, and the Mount of Olives opposite gives a wide view over the walls, with the ancient Garden of Gethsemane below. Mahane Yehuda market, in the west of the city, has stalls of spices, fruit and pastries. The Israel Museum shows the Dead Sea Scrolls. Bethlehem is a few kilometres south, and the Dead Sea is about an hour's drive east.
Hummus, falafel, shakshuka, sabich and fresh bread fill the market stalls, and knafeh, a hot cheese pastry soaked in syrup, is the sweet of the Old City. The week has three rest days, Friday for Muslims, Saturday for Jews and Sunday for Christians, and the streets change with each.
