Gros Islet is a fishing village at the northern end of St Lucia, about ten kilometres from Castries by road. Nearby Rodney Bay is the island's main resort area, with a long, sheltered bay, a marina and Reduit Beach. Cap Estate, to the north, has golf and villas on a headland. Fishing boats are drawn up on the village beach.
Pigeon Island National Landmark, a former island joined to the mainland by a causeway, has the ruins of Fort Rodney, built in the 18th century when British and French fleets fought for control of the Caribbean, and trails up to hilltop lookouts. Admiral Rodney used the island as a lookout before his victory at the Battle of the Saintes in 1782. Each December, yachts that have crossed the Atlantic in a rally arrive at Rodney Bay marina.
The village is known for its weekly Friday-night street party, with music and grilled fish and chicken cooked at roadside barbecues. Creole dishes of green fig and saltfish, callaloo and breadfruit are found in local kitchens, with fresh coconut water. Trade winds keep the days breezy, and the drier months run from December to May.
