Experience the best of Aqaba
Aqaba is Jordan's only seaport, a warm Red Sea resort town at the head of its gulf, backed by desert mountains and near Wadi Rum and Petra.

Aqaba sits at the head of the Gulf of Aqaba, at the north end of the Red Sea, with the mountains of Edom behind it and Israel, Egypt and Saudi Arabia on the other shores of the gulf. Jordan's only seaport, it has been a trading place since ancient times, and an early Islamic city, Ayla, has excavated remains on the seafront. The fort near the harbour dates from the Mamluk period, and Aqaba fell to the forces of the Arab Revolt in 1917.
The coral reefs close to the shore make Aqaba Jordan's centre for diving and snorkelling, and there are several wrecks, among them a ship sunk on purpose, the Cedar Pride. Glass-bottom boats and sailing trips cross the gulf. Wadi Rum, a desert valley of red sand and sandstone cliffs, is about an hour to the north-east, and Petra is roughly two hours to the north.
Sayadieh, fish baked with rice, onions and spices, is a coastal dish, and the harbour restaurants serve grilled fish with salads, hummus and warm bread. Mansaf, lamb cooked in a sour yoghurt sauce and served over rice, is Jordan's national dish. Summers are very hot, though the sea stays warm and clear all year.
