Sweimah, also spelt Sweimeh, lies on the north-eastern shore of the Dead Sea in Jordan, where the land falls to more than 430 metres below sea level, the lowest dry land on Earth. The lake's water is nearly ten times as salty as the ocean, so bathers float without effort, and its mineral-rich mud is spread over the skin. Resort hotels sit among palms along the shore, with the brown hills of the Jordanian plateau rising behind.

North of the shore, Al-Maghtas on the River Jordan is a World Heritage site traditionally linked with the baptism of Jesus, with ruins of churches and pools. Mount Nebo, where Moses is said to have seen the Promised Land, and the mosaics of Madaba lie to the north-east. Wadi Mujib, a canyon where streams run through narrow gorges, lies to the south.

Mansaf, lamb cooked in a sauce of dried fermented yoghurt and served on rice with pine nuts, is Jordan's national dish, and mezze of hummus, moutabal and falafel come first, with Arabic coffee spiced with cardamom after. Winter and spring days are mild, autumn is warm, and summer heat is extreme.
