Itinerary

  1. The Angkor Temple complex in Cambodia is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that dates back to the 9th century when it was built by the Khmer Empire. The complex covers an area of over 400 square kilometers and includes over 100 temples, the most famous of which is Angkor Wat. Angkor Wat, the most famous temple in the complex, was built in the early 12th century by King Suryavarman II as a state temple and mausoleum. It is considered one of the largest religious monuments in the world and is renowned for its intricate carvings and bas-reliefs depicting Hindu mythology. Over the centuries, the Angkor Temple complex fell into disrepair as the Khmer Empire declined and was eventually abandoned in the 15th century. The temples were reclaimed by the jungle and remained hidden for centuries until they were rediscovered by a French explorer in the 19th century.

  2. The Bayon Temple is a well-known and iconic temple located in the ancient city of Angkor in Cambodia. It was built in the late 12th or early 13th century by King Jayavarman VII, who is known for his grand building projects and empire-building in the region. The Bayon Temple was originally dedicated to the Mahayana Buddhist tradition, which was prominent in Cambodia at the time. The temple complex also includes various galleries, terraces, and corridors featuring bas-reliefs that depict historical events, religious ceremonies, and everyday life during the time of King Jayavarman VII. Over the centuries, the Bayon Temple fell into disrepair and was largely abandoned, as the Khmer Empire declined and the region was beset by warfare and political instability. It was rediscovered in the 19th century by French explorers and has since been restored and preserved as a UNESCO World Heritage site.

  3. Ta Prohm is a temple within the Angkor Temple complex in Cambodia that was built in the late 12th and early 13th centuries by King Jayavarman VII. It is located about 1 kilometer east of Angkor Wat and is known for its unique combination of nature and architecture. Ta Prohm was originally built as a Mahayana Buddhist monastery and university dedicated to the king's mother. It was one of the largest and most wealthy temples in the Angkor Empire, with a population of over 12,500 people, including priests, dancers, and servants. Ta Prohm gained international fame in the 20th century when it was featured in the movie "Tomb Raider," starring Angelina Jolie. The temple's atmospheric ruins and intertwining trees have made it a popular tourist destination, drawing visitors from around the world to witness its unique blend of history and nature.

    1 h

  4. Ta Nei Temple is a lesser-known temple within the Angkor Temple complex in Cambodia. It is located about 500 meters east of the Victory Gate entrance to Angkor Thom. Ta Nei Temple was built in the late12th century during the reign of King Jayavarman VII, the same king who constructed the famous Bayon Temple. Ta Nei Temple is a small, secluded temple that was likely built as a place of worship and meditation. It is a single-tier temple with a central tower surrounded by a laterite wall. The temple is relatively simple in design compared to other temples in the Angkor complex, but it features some intricate carvings and bas-reliefs that showcase the artistic and architectural skill of the Khmer Empire.

About Siem Reap

Siem Reap is the riverside town beside Angkor, Cambodia's vast complex of Khmer temples, with night markets, river walks and a relaxed centre.

Angkor Wat, often called the largest religious monument in the world, rises above its moat in a silhouette of lotus-bud towers that is breathtaking at sunrise. Nearby, the walled city of Angkor Thom holds the Bayon, with its more than two hundred serene stone faces, the Terrace of the Elephants and the Baphuon, while Ta Prohm is gripped by the roots of giant silk-cotton and strangler fig trees.

Top-ranked sights in Siem Reap: Angkor Thom, Tonlé Sap, Kampong Phluk.
