Experience the best of Phnom Penh
Phnom Penh is Cambodia's riverside capital, where a gilded royal palace, French-era boulevards and markets sit beside memorials to the Khmer Rouge years.

The Royal Palace, with its tall pointed spires, and the neighbouring Silver Pagoda, whose floor is laid with silver tiles, stand close to the riverfront promenade where the Mekong and Tonlé Sap meet. Wat Phnom, a small hill temple, gave the city its name, and the National Museum, in a red Khmer-style building, holds a major collection of Angkorian sculpture. Art Deco Central Market and the busy Russian Market are good places to wander.
The city's recent history is told at the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum, a former school used as a prison by the Khmer Rouge, and at the Choeung Ek memorial about fifteen kilometres south. Away from the centre, a boat crosses to Silk Island on the Mekong, known for weaving, and the old royal capital of Oudong stands on hills to the north-west. Kampot and Kep on the south coast are a few hours by road.
Khmer cooking is gentle and fragrant: fish amok steamed in banana leaf, beef lok lak with a pepper-and-lime dip, noodle soups, and baguette sandwiches, a French legacy. Tropical fruit and iced sugarcane juice are on every street. It is hot all year; the cooler dry months from November to February are most comfortable, and the Water Festival boat races on the river come around the start of that season.
