Sihanoukville was planned in the 1950s as Cambodia's deep-water port and named after Norodom Sihanouk. It lies on a peninsula on the Gulf of Thailand, with low hills behind a coast of long beaches. The port still handles much of the country's sea trade, and the city has grown quickly with hotels and new building along the shore.
Beaches such as Otres, Ochheuteal and Serendipity run along the western shore, and the islands off the coast, among them Koh Rong, Koh Rong Samloem and Koh Ta Kiev, have white sand, clear water and coral. Ream National Park, east of the city, protects mangroves, beaches and forest. Farther east along the coast, Kampot and Kep are known for pepper and crab.
Seafood grills line the beaches, serving squid, prawns and fish with a dipping sauce of lime, salt and pepper, and amok, fish steamed in coconut milk and curry paste, is the national dish. The dry season from November to April brings clear skies, and the wet months from May to October bring heavy rain and rougher seas. Noodle soups and iced coffee fill the markets from early morning.
