Itinerary
The Most Visited temple in the city, the Gangaramaya Temple which organizes Sri Lanka’s largest and the most colourful Vesak festival annually, has a history of 120 years. It was established in 1885 by Venerable Hikkaduwe Sri Sumangala Nayaka Thera at a time when Buddhist and cultural resurgence were much needed as the country was under the colonial rule.
The temple was built in Maradana, Colombo by a group of Indian Chetti traders known as ‘Thiruvilanga Nakarathar’ who moved to Sri Lanka for business two hundred years ago.
The Pettah Floating Market in Sri Lanka is a vibrant hub nestled along the banks of the Beira Lake in Colombo. This unique marketplace offers a fusion of traditional and modern shopping experiences, with rows of brightly colored stalls selling a variety of goods including fresh produce, handicrafts, clothing, and souvenirs. Visitors can also enjoy boat rides along the tranquil waters, adding to the market's charm and allure. It serves as a cultural and commercial hotspot, bustling with activity and offering a glimpse into the dynamic spirit of Sri Lanka's capital city.
Every architectural square inch of this monument is filled with lavish symbols of the island’s rich history and political freedom. At the entrance to the building is an imposing statue of D.S. Senanayake, Sri Lanka’s first prime minister, surrounded by four menacing stone lions with protruding eyes. These feral guardians were recreated from the lion statues of the 13th century Yapahuwa kingdom. The most prominent feature of the monument, the assembly hall, was inspired by the “Magul Maduwa,” the royal court of the King of Kandy, the last kingdom on the island. Incidentally, it was at the Magul Maduwa that the Kandyan chieftains handed over the island’s sovereignty to the British throne in 1815.
The Dutch Hospital Shopping Precinct in Sri Lanka, located in the heart of Colombo, is a charming blend of historic ambiance and contemporary elegance. Its colonial architecture, adorned with picturesque cobblestone pathways and arched passageways, creates a unique atmosphere for visitors to explore upscale boutiques, indulge in gourmet dining experiences, and unwind in stylish cafes, all amidst a rich tapestry of cultural heritage.
Galle Face Green, situated in Colombo, Sri Lanka, is a vast ocean-side urban park offering respite from the bustling city life. From serene sunrise strolls to lively evening gatherings, Galle Face Green serves as a hub for recreational activities such as kite flying, picnics, and street food indulgence. About Colombo
Colombo is Sri Lanka's largest city and commercial capital, where colonial landmarks, Buddhist temples, busy markets and a seafront promenade meet.
Galle Face Green, a long seafront lawn, fills with families, kite flyers and street-food stalls as the sun sets over the Indian Ocean. Nearby, the Fort district keeps colonial buildings such as the Old Dutch Hospital, restored as shops and restaurants, and the red-and-white striped Jami Ul-Alfar Mosque rises over the crowded market streets of Pettah.
