About Colonia del Sacramento
Colonia del Sacramento is a small Uruguayan town on the Río de la Plata, with a Portuguese-era quarter of cobbled streets, a lighthouse and river sunsets.
Colonia del Sacramento lies on the Río de la Plata in south-western Uruguay, facing Buenos Aires across the estuary. It was founded by the Portuguese in 1680 and contested with Spain for a century, and its historic quarter, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, keeps the layout and low houses of that time. Cobbled lanes run to the Plaza Mayor, the old city gate with its drawbridge and wall, and the waterfront.
Top-ranked sights in Colonia del Sacramento: Colonia del Sacramento Lighthouse (Faro de Colonia del Sacramento), Portuguese Museum (Museo Portugues).
