The ancient city of Jerash has been inhabited for more than 6,500 years, coming under Roman rule in 63BC. It is known to be one of the best-preserved Roman town's in the world, and was hidden for hundreds of years before being recently re-discovered. It features a beautiful blend of Roman and Middle Eastern architectures. The ancient and modern cities are located directly beside each other, separated only by a wall. Jerash is located about 30 miles north of the capital Amman, and the ruins of the old city have been very carefully preserved to avoid damage and show authenticity. Some interesting sights to see include the hippodrome, a partially restored Roman-era stadium, the Temple of Artemis, which was dedicated to the patron goddess of the city, and the Jerash Archeological Museum.

About Amman

Amman, Jordan's capital, spreads across a series of hills, with Roman ruins, crowded downtown souks and a warm welcome at the start of any Jordan journey.

The Amman Citadel crowns Jabal al-Qal'a with the Temple of Hercules, the Umayyad Palace and sweeping views over the city. Below, the Roman Theatre, carved into the hillside, seats thousands, and the downtown souks around the Grand Husseini Mosque sell spices, gold and sweets, with the scent of coffee and cardamom in the air.

Top-ranked sights in Amman: Petra, Jerash (Gerasa), Ajloun Castle.
