Experience the best of Valletta
Valletta is Malta's tiny walled capital on a rocky peninsula, built by the Knights of St John with baroque palaces, a deep harbour and a Caravaggio.

Valletta was founded in 1566 by the Order of St John, a year after the Great Siege of Malta, and laid out on a grid of streets on a narrow peninsula between two harbours. The whole city is a World Heritage site. St John's Co-Cathedral looks plain outside but is gilded within, and holds Caravaggio's Beheading of Saint John the Baptist. The Grand Master's Palace and the Upper Barrakka Gardens look over Grand Harbour.
Fort St Elmo guards the tip of the peninsula and houses the National War Museum, and the Manoel Theatre, from 1732, is among the oldest working theatres in Europe. Across Grand Harbour, the Three Cities of Vittoriosa, Senglea and Cospicua are reached by small boats. The old capital, Mdina, a silent walled hill town, is about 12 kilometres inland, and the megalithic temples of Ġgantija on Gozo are older than the pyramids.
Pastizzi, flaky pastries filled with ricotta or peas, and ftira, a ring-shaped bread with toppings, are eaten on the street, while rabbit stew is the national dish and lampuki pie is cooked in autumn. Maltese honey rings and Gozitan cheeselets complete the table. Summers are hot and bright, and the village feasts of the festa season fill them with fireworks and brass bands.
