Trou d'Eau Douce is a small fishing village on the east coast of Mauritius, facing a wide lagoon sheltered by a coral reef. Fishing boats and launches sit along the shore, and a short strip of restaurants and shops looks onto the water. Sugar cane fields stretch inland. The east coast catches the trade winds, so the air is breezier and often cooler than on the west coast.
Île aux Cerfs, a wooded island with white beaches and a golf course, is a short boat ride away and the main excursion from the village. Boat trips also run up the river to the Grand River South East waterfall, and catamarans and speedboats cross the lagoon for snorkelling and barbecue lunches. Mahébourg and Blue Bay Marine Park lie to the south, and Belle Mare beach to the north.
Octopus curry, grilled fish and prawns, and Creole dishes such as rougaille, a tomato and thyme stew, are the kinds of food served here. Dholl puri and gateaux piments are sold as snacks, and rum is the local spirit. Trade winds keep the east coast breezy through the cooler months from May to October.
