Chamarel sits on a plateau in the south-west of Mauritius, on the edge of the Black River Gorges, where the air is cooler than on the coast. The village is surrounded by sugar cane, coffee bushes and forest, with views to the sea and the Le Morne mountain below. Its Seven Coloured Earths, dunes of red, brown, violet and other shades of weathered volcanic soil, lie in a small fenced park.
Chamarel Waterfall tumbles from a high cliff into a forested gorge and is seen from a viewpoint above. The Black River Gorges National Park has walking trails, endemic birds and wild macaques, and a rum distillery and a coffee plantation lie on the plateau. Le Morne Brabant, a World Heritage Site, rises on the coast to the west.
Creole cooking here means curries, rougail, a spiced tomato and onion sauce, fish vindaye and salads of palm heart. The uplands are cooler and drier from May to November, and the warm, wet summers from December to April bring cyclone rain. Dholl puri, soft split-pea flatbreads, are the daily snack.
