Port Louis lies on the north-west coast of Mauritius, at the foot of a ring of volcanic peaks. Founded in the 1730s by the French governor Mahé de La Bourdonnais, it is a mix of colonial buildings, mosques, temples and glass towers. The Central Market sells spices, fruit, vanilla and tea, and the Caudan Waterfront has shops, cafés and the Blue Penny Museum, which holds the island's rare early stamps.
The Aapravasi Ghat, a World Heritage site, is the immigration depot where indentured labourers arrived from 1849. Fort Adelaide, known as the Citadel, looks over the city from a hill, the Jummah Mosque stands in the middle of town, and Chinatown has shops and small restaurants. The Natural History Museum has a dodo skeleton. The Pamplemousses Botanical Garden, with giant water lilies, lies about ten kilometres north.
Dholl puri, a thin flatbread filled with ground split peas and served with curry and chutney, is the street snack of the island, along with gateaux piments, fried chilli fritters, and boulettes, small dumplings in broth. Alouda, a sweet milk drink, cools the afternoon.
