Skopje straddles the Vardar River in a wide valley, its two halves joined by the fifteenth-century Stone Bridge. On the north bank the Old Bazaar is a web of lanes lined with workshops, cafés and mosques, with the Kale fortress above it. On the south bank, Macedonia Square is dominated by a giant statue of a horseman, popularly taken for Alexander the Great, amid the monuments, bridges and neoclassical façades added in the early 2010s. An earthquake in 1963 destroyed much of the city.
Mother Teresa was born in Skopje in 1910, and a memorial house honours her. The Mustafa Pasha Mosque dates from 1492, and the Daut Pasha Hamam, an Ottoman bath, is now an art gallery. A cable car climbs Mount Vodno, crowned by the Millennium Cross, and Matka Canyon, with a lake and small caves, is about fifteen kilometres from the city. Lake Ohrid lies to the south-west.
Tavče gravče, baked beans in a clay dish, ajvar, a relish of roasted red pepper, shopska salad and burek are the everyday foods, with grilled kebapi in the bazaar. Rakija, a fruit brandy, and the dark red Vranec wine go with them.
