Ohrid stands on the north-east shore of Lake Ohrid, which North Macedonia shares with Albania and which UNESCO lists for both its nature and its culture. The old town climbs a hill from the water to Samuel's Fortress, and the church of St John at Kaneo perches on a cliff above the lake. Frescoed Byzantine churches, among them St Sophia and St Clement's at Plaošnik, record the town's role as a centre of Slavic learning.
An ancient theatre sits on the slope of the old town, and cobbled lanes lead down to the harbour, where boats cruise the lake. South along the shore is the monastery of St Naum, where springs feed the lake, and the mountains of Galičica National Park separate it from Lake Prespa. To the north, the town of Struga hosts a poetry festival each August.
Fish from the lake, grilled or baked, is the local speciality, and tavče gravče, beans baked in a clay pan, shopska salad and rakija are on every menu. Summers are warm enough for swimming in July and August, and winters are cold. In the lanes of the old town, Ohrid pearls, beads coated with a lustre made from fish scales, are sold as keepsakes.
