Sentosa is a small island off the south coast of Singapore, reached by a causeway, boardwalk, cable car and monorail. It was once a British military base called Pulau Blakang Mati, and it took the name Sentosa, Malay for peace and tranquillity, in the early 1970s. Fort Siloso, a coastal gun battery on the western side, has restored tunnels and gun emplacements.
Siloso, Palawan and Tanjong beaches have sand, beach bars and calm water. The island is home to a large theme park, an aquarium and a water adventure park, and a luge track runs down the central hill. Palawan Beach has a suspension bridge to a small islet, and the cable car links Sentosa to Mount Faber and HarbourFront on the mainland.
Food on Sentosa is Singaporean at its simplest: chilli crab, laksa and chicken rice served in food courts and beach restaurants. It is hot and humid all year, with the heaviest rain from November to January, and kaya toast with iced kopi is the standard breakfast.
