Sauraha is a village on the edge of Chitwan National Park, in the Terai, the flat southern lowlands of Nepal, beside the Rapti River. The park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, protects sal forest, tall grassland and riverbanks, and is one of the places where the greater one-horned rhinoceros can be seen in the wild.
Jeep drives and guided walks follow forest tracks, and canoe trips on the Rapti drift past gharial and marsh mugger crocodiles basking on the banks. More than five hundred species of bird have been recorded, from hornbills to kingfishers. Tharu villages near the park keep their own traditions, including a stick dance performed in the evening.
Meals centre on dal bhat, lentils with rice and vegetable curry, and Tharu cooking adds fish, snails cooked with garlic, and steamed rice-flour dumplings called dhikri. Kathmandu lies to the east, a long drive or a short flight away. The monsoon is hot and drenching, winter mornings are misty and cool, and the tall grass is cut in January.
