Experience the best of Kathmandu
Kathmandu is Nepal's ancient, colourful capital, a valley city of temples, stupas and royal squares and the gateway to the Himalaya.

Kathmandu Durbar Square, the old royal square, is crowded with pagoda-roofed temples and palaces, and nearby lives the Kumari, the city's living child goddess. Thamel, the travellers' quarter, is a tangle of lanes selling trekking gear, prayer flags and handicrafts, busy with cafés and rooftop restaurants.
Swayambhunath, the Monkey Temple, crowns a hill with its painted Buddha eyes, and Boudhanath, one of the largest stupas in the world, is circled by pilgrims spinning prayer wheels. On the banks of the Bagmati River, Pashupatinath is Nepal's holiest Hindu temple. The neighbouring royal cities of Patan and Bhaktapur, each with its own Durbar Square, are filled with fine woodcarving and brick temples.
Momo dumplings, dal bhat and Newari feasts are the staples, with spiced milk tea always at hand. Autumn brings the clearest mountain views and the main trekking season, spring blooms with rhododendrons, and the summer monsoon is wet. Scenic flights along the Himalaya toward Everest, sunrise views from Nagarkot and the road to Pokhara and the Annapurnas all start here.
