Saariselkä is a resort village in the far north of Finnish Lapland, well north of the Arctic Circle, on the edge of Urho Kekkonen National Park, one of the largest in Finland. Round, treeless fells rise from forests of pine and birch, and Kaunispää fell above the village has a lift and a view. Ivalo, with the nearest airport, is a short drive to the north.

Lake Inari, Finland's third-largest lake, with its thousands of islands, and the village of Inari, home to the Sámi Parliament and the Siida museum of Sámi culture, lie to the north-west. The national park has long marked hiking trails and wilderness huts, and the northern lights appear over the fells on clear nights from autumn to spring.

Reindeer, Arctic char and whitefish, cloudberries and warm bread cheese with jam are the dishes of the north, and the sauna is a daily habit. Winters are long, dark and snowy, with the sun below the horizon for several weeks, while in high summer it stays up around the clock, and the autumn colours of the fells in September are known as ruska.
