Experience the best of Luosto

Luosto is a village built for visitors around the fell of the same name, a rounded mountain of old, worn rock covered with spruce, pine and birch. The village is small, with hotels, cabins and a few shops, and it lies north of the Arctic Circle.

Pyhä-Luosto National Park protects the forested fells and old woodland of the area, with marked trails and lakes. The neighbouring fell of Pyhätunturi has ski slopes in winter, and amethyst is mined on the nearby Lampivaara fell. Rovaniemi, the Lapland capital, lies about 90 kilometres to the south-west.

Lapland food includes reindeer, usually smoked or dried, and fish from the lakes. Cloudberries, called lakka, grow in the bogs and are served with cream and sweet dishes. The sun stays above the horizon for weeks around midsummer, and in winter the nights are long, with the northern lights often visible in clear skies.
