Levi is the name of both a rounded fell, about 530 metres high, and the resort that spreads over its slopes and around the village of Sirkka, in the municipality of Kittilä. It lies north of the Arctic Circle in Finnish Lapland, among open fells, frozen marshes and forests of spruce and pine. Skiing runs on the fell from autumn into spring, and log-cabin restaurants and saunas fill the village.

Around Levi, the Lappish landscape is the attraction: reindeer farms, huskies pulling sleds through the forest, and snowshoe and snowmobile tracks across frozen lakes. In the dark months the northern lights can be seen over the fells, and in summer the midnight sun barely sets. Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park, a chain of fells with long hiking trails, lies to the south-west, and the small airport at Kittilä is close.

Lapland's table is built on reindeer, served sautéed with mashed potato and lingonberries, and on salmon soup, cloudberries and leipäjuusto, a baked cheese eaten warm with cloudberry jam. Coffee is brewed over an open fire in a cabin. Snow covers the fells for much of the year, and autumn brings the red and gold of ruska.
