Port Vila lies on the south-west coast of Efate, in the South Pacific archipelago of Vanuatu, around a sheltered harbour with small islands offshore. Vanuatu was jointly ruled by Britain and France until independence in 1980, and Port Vila still uses Bislama, English and French, with French bakeries and cafés on its streets. The central market, piled with produce and handicrafts, is the town's meeting place, and the Vanuatu Cultural Centre records island traditions.
A road circles Efate, passing the Mele Cascades, a series of waterfalls and pools in the forest, blue holes for swimming, white-sand beaches and Hideaway Island, which has an underwater post office. Ferries and flights link Port Vila to other islands: Tanna, with its smoking volcano, Mount Yasur, and Pentecost, where men dive from tall wooden towers in a ritual said to have inspired bungee jumping. Espiritu Santo, to the north, has the wreck of the troopship President Coolidge, a famous dive.
Kava, a peppery drink made from the roots of a plant, is drunk at dusk in local bars called nakamals. The cooler dry season runs from May to October, and the hot, wet months from November to April bring cyclones. Lap lap, a pudding of grated root vegetables baked in banana leaves in an earth oven, is the national dish.
