Experience the best of Nairobi

Nairobi is Kenya's energetic capital and the starting point for East African safari, with a national park where wildlife roams beneath the city skyline.

Nairobi National Park lies just beyond the suburbs, and its lions, rhinos, giraffes and buffalo can be seen with skyscrapers on the horizon. Close by, an orphanage raises young elephants rescued from across Kenya, and the Giraffe Centre lets visitors meet rare Rothschild's giraffes eye to eye from a raised platform.

In the leafy suburb of Karen, the Karen Blixen Museum preserves the farmhouse of the Out of Africa author beneath the Ngong Hills. The Nairobi National Museum traces the region's natural and cultural history, while craft markets sell carvings, beadwork and kikoy cloth, and the city's galleries and music venues show a confident, contemporary Kenyan creativity.

Kenyan food centres on nyama choma grilled meat, ugali and sukuma wiki greens, with excellent local coffee and tea. Thanks to its altitude, the climate is mild all year, with long rains in spring and shorter rains toward the end of the year. Nairobi is also the natural base for the Maasai Mara, for Amboseli with its views of Kilimanjaro, and for Lake Naivasha.
