Diani Beach runs for many kilometres along Kenya's south coast, a ribbon of soft white sand with coconut palms and baobab trees behind it. A coral reef lies offshore, which keeps the water calm and clear. The beach lies south of Mombasa, across the Likoni channel, and colobus monkeys swing through the coastal forest behind the sand.

Kaya Kinondo, a sacred forest of the Mijikenda people, is a protected remnant of the old coastal woodland. Shimba Hills National Reserve, inland, shelters sable antelope and elephants. South of Diani, Wasini Island and the Kisite-Mpunguti Marine Park offer dolphins and snorkelling over coral gardens. Boat trips run out in wooden dhows, and the lagoon is a favourite for kitesurfing, with diving along the reef.

Swahili cooking blends coconut, spice and seafood: grilled fish, prawns and lobster, coconut curries, pilau rice, mandazi doughnuts, and madafu, the water of young coconuts, drunk from the shell. The heaviest rain falls in April and May.
