Lake Nakuru National Park surrounds a shallow alkaline lake on the floor of Kenya's Great Rift Valley, just south of the town of Nakuru. The lake is known for its flamingos, which feed on algae in the soda-rich water and can colour the shoreline pink when large flocks gather, though numbers change with the water level. The park is fenced and covers the lake, grassland, acacia woodland and rocky escarpments.
Black and white rhinos live in the park, which holds a rhino sanctuary, along with Rothschild's giraffe, buffalo, lions, leopards, and many pelicans and other birds. Baboon Cliff and the Out of Africa lookout give views over the lake, and Makalia Falls drops in the south. Lake Elmenteita and Lake Bogoria, with its hot springs and geysers, lie within reach, and the Menengai crater rises beside Nakuru.
Nakuru's farmland and dairy country supply the town's markets, where nyama choma, grilled meat, ugali with kale, tilapia and mandazi, a fried dough, are everyday food. The lake birdlife is rich throughout the year, and the rains of March to May turn the escarpments green.
