Experience the best of Luxembourg City
Luxembourg City is the capital of the Grand Duchy, a hilltop fortress city of deep gorges, old ramparts and European institutions.

Luxembourg City stands on a rocky plateau cut by the gorges of the Alzette and Pétrusse rivers, and its old quarters and fortifications are a World Heritage Site. The Bock Promontory, with tunnels and casemates carved into the rock, was first fortified in 963, and the Corniche promenade follows the old ramparts above the Grund, the old lower town. The Grand Ducal Palace stands in the old town, and the Cathedral of Notre-Dame was begun by the Jesuits in the early seventeenth century.
Bridges link the districts, including the Adolphe Bridge and the stone Passerelle viaduct that crosses the Pétrusse valley. On the Kirchberg plateau, the Philharmonie concert hall, the MUDAM modern art museum and the European Union institutions are housed in modern buildings. The Moselle valley, with its vineyards and the village of Schengen, lies to the south-east, and the castle of Vianden and the rocky Mullerthal region are an easy drive north.
Judd mat Gaardebounen, smoked pork collar with broad beans, is the national dish, and Bouneschlupp, a bean soup, and Gromperekichelcher, potato fritters, are other classics. Crémant and white wines from the Moselle accompany them, and Quetschentaart, a plum tart, comes in autumn. French, German and Luxembourgish are all heard in the streets. Spring and early autumn are mild, and winters are cold.
