La Romana grew up around sugar, and the cane fields and mills of the surrounding plains remain part of the landscape. The city lies on the Caribbean coast of the south-east beside the Dulce River, with a small central park, a cargo port and a free zone where cigars are rolled. Nearby, the resort estate of Casa de Campo covers a large stretch of coast with marinas, golf courses and tropical gardens.
Altos de Chavón, a village begun in the 1970s in the style of a 16th-century Mediterranean town, stands on a cliff above the Chavón River, with cobbled lanes, a stone church, galleries and an amphitheatre. Day trips run to Saona Island, a nature reserve ringed with palm beaches and shallow lagoons, and to the fishing village of Bayahíbe, gateway to the Parque Nacional del Este and Catalina Island.
Dominican cooking is built on rice, beans and plantain. La bandera, the national plate, combines rice, red beans and stewed meat, mangú, mashed plantain with fried onions, is breakfast, and fish simmered in coconut milk is a coastal dish. Rum and fresh fruit juices are everywhere. The warmth barely changes through the year, and the sea is good for swimming in every month.
