Cabarete curves round a bay on the north coast of the Dominican Republic, near Sosúa and Puerto Plata, with one long beach and a main street of cafés, shops and open-air restaurants. Trade winds blow steadily across the bay, which has made it one of the Caribbean's main centres for kitesurfing and windsurfing, and the water in front of the town is dotted with sails.
Playa Encuentro, a few kilometres west, is a surf beach, and Sosúa and Puerto Plata are short drives farther along the coast. The Damajagua waterfalls, a river canyon of limestone pools, and the cable car up Mount Isabel de Torres, with a botanical garden and a statue of Christ at the top, are the popular day trips. To the east, Río San Juan has a mangrove lagoon.
Fresh fish, rice and beans, tostones of twice-fried green plantain, and crisp chicharrón pork are the staples of beachside kitchens, with coconut water and rum drinks to match. Merengue and bachata drift from open-air bars after dark. The wind blows through much of the year, and the sea stays warm throughout.
