Kiruna lies in Swedish Lapland, well north of the Arctic Circle, in a landscape of birch forest, lakes and low mountains. The town grew around the Kiirunavaara iron mine at the start of the twentieth century, and the mine still shapes it. Its wooden church, designed by Gustaf Wickman and built in 1912, takes the form of a Sami hut, and the town's streets curve around the hillside.
Close by, a hotel built each winter from the ice of the Torne River stands at Jukkasjärvi, and the Sami people keep reindeer herding and handicraft traditions alive. Abisko National Park, to the west, is known for its clear skies and northern lights, and Kebnekaise, Sweden's highest mountain, rises above 2,000 metres in the range beyond. Dog sledding and snowmobile trips cross the frozen lakes.
Reindeer, cooked as a stew or served dried, Arctic char, cloudberries and lingonberries are the local specialities, with Sami flatbread baked in rounds. Winter brings weeks when the sun stays below the horizon and the aurora shows on clear nights, and in early summer the sun does not set for several weeks.
