Experience the best of Gothenburg
Gothenburg is Sweden's west-coast port city, with canals, a wooden-house district, an amusement park and a car-free archipelago offshore.

Gothenburg was founded in 1621 by King Gustav II Adolf at the mouth of the Göta älv, and Dutch engineers laid out its canals, which still ring the old centre. Avenyn, the main boulevard, runs to Götaplatsen and its fountain with Poseidon, beside the Museum of Art. Haga, an old district of wooden houses, cafés and giant cinnamon buns, and Feskekôrka, a fish market in a building shaped like a church, are among the best-loved corners.
Liseberg, an amusement park opened in 1923, lies on the edge of the centre, and the Universeum science centre and the Maritiman, a floating museum of ships, are also popular. Ferries and trams go to the southern archipelago, with car-free islands such as Styrsö and Vrångö, and the northern coast of Bohuslän, with the island fortress town of Marstrand, has red granite, fishing villages and shellfish.
Fika, a coffee with a cardamom bun, is a daily habit here in every season, from long, mild summer days to cool, wet winters. A räkmacka, an open sandwich piled with shrimp and mayonnaise, fish soup, herring and meatballs are the city's tastes.
