Experience the best of Budapest

Budapest joins hilly Buda and flat Pest across the Danube, a grand capital of thermal baths, riverside palaces and lively ruin bars.

On the Buda side, Castle Hill holds Buda Castle, the Matthias Church and the white turrets of Fishermen's Bastion, all looking down on the river. The Chain Bridge crosses to Pest, where the Hungarian Parliament Building stretches along the bank and St Stephen's Basilica rises a few streets inland. Gellért Hill and its Citadella give the widest views.

Thermal water is part of daily life. The yellow Széchenyi Baths in City Park are the best known, alongside the domed Ottoman-era pool and rooftop terrace of the Rudas Baths. Andrássy Avenue leads past the Opera House to Heroes' Square, the old Jewish Quarter is home to the Great Synagogue and a cluster of ruin bars set in crumbling courtyards, and Margaret Island offers a green retreat midstream.

The Great Market Hall is an easy place to sample the city's warming, paprika-rich food: goulash, chicken paprikash, lángos fried bread and chimney cake. Spring and autumn are ideal, summer brings riverside festivals, and winter turns steaming outdoor pools and Christmas markets into highlights. A Danube cruise at dusk shows both banks lit up.
