Boquete lies in the Chiriquí highlands of western Panama, at about 1,200 metres, in a river valley beneath Volcán Barú, which at about 3,475 metres is the highest point in the country. The air is cool and often misty, and the hills are covered in coffee farms, flower gardens and orchards. A small town of cafés, bakeries and shops serves as the base.

Coffee tours visit working farms where the beans, including the rare geisha variety, are grown, picked and roasted. The Quetzales trail climbs through cloud forest in the volcano's national park, where the resplendent quetzal lives, and other trails lead to waterfalls and canyons. Hot springs at Caldera lie in a lowland valley a drive away, and the Pacific coast and the islands of the Gulf of Chiriquí are a day trip.

A flower and coffee fair fills the town each January, and highland farms supply strawberries, oranges and vegetables. Panamanian dishes such as sancocho, a chicken soup, arroz con pollo and fried plantain patacones appear in local restaurants. Afternoon drizzle called bajareque drifts down from the mountains during the wetter months, and the first months of the year are sunnier.
