Panama City sits on the Pacific coast beside the entrance to the Panama Canal, and ships queue in the bay for the passage. The Miraflores Locks, a short drive from the centre, let visitors watch vessels being raised and lowered. Casco Viejo, the old quarter founded in 1673, has restored colonial plazas, churches and balconied houses, and the Amador Causeway runs out into the bay with views back to the skyline.

Ruins of the original city, Panamá Viejo, founded in 1519, stand on the shore east of the centre, with a ruined cathedral tower. Ancón Hill and Metropolitan Natural Park offer rainforest walks within the city limits, where sloths, toucans and monkeys can be seen. The Biomuseo is a colourful building by Frank Gehry, and Soberanía National Park and Gatún Lake are good for birdwatching. Taboga Island is a ferry ride away.

Panamanian dishes include sancocho, a chicken and root vegetable soup, ceviche from the fish market, fried plantain and crispy hojaldras for breakfast. Coffee from the highlands of Chiriquí is grown on the slopes of the Barú volcano. The dry season runs from December to April, with sunny days; from May to November expect heavy afternoon showers.
