The reservoir is situated at a place called Boca del Valle, 23 km upstream from the confluence of the Yeso and Maipo Rivers at an altitude of 3,000 meters above sea level, in the municipality of San José de Maipo, Cordillera Province, Santiago Metropolitan Region. It was built to ensure a reliable supply of drinking water and irrigation for the area.

The hot springs are located 109 km from downtown Santiago and at an altitude of 3,500 meters.
