It was built to ensure a reliable supply of drinking water and irrigation for the area.

The hot springs are located 109 km from downtown Santiago and at an altitude of 3,500 meters. Their waters, with temperatures ranging from 25 to 55 °C, are recommended for all types of muscle injuries, for improving blood circulation and healing affected areas, for relaxation of body and mind, and for combating depression.
