1. Visit a UNESCO World Heritage Site, since 2007 considered one of the seven Modern Wonders of the World. Learn about the architecture, way of life and the importance of astronomy and religion in its construction and their impact on the culture. Spending as much time as you want at Chichen Itza, you will visit both the post-classic (987-1200AD) buildings and the classic era (650-900AD) buildings in what was the most important Mayan city for each period before its abandonment in 1200AD. 2. Visit a second Mayan archaeological site, Ek Balam, and enjoy a totally different more interactive experience, very complementary to your visit to Chichen Itza. Climb the only pyramid near Cancun & the Riviera Maya that you're still allowed to climb, enter Mayan rooms in the palace and in a temple, and stand open-mouthed at the extraordinary detail preserved in the stucco sculptures outside an 8th century tomb for a leader.
