The cave was discovered only 300 years ago when an earthquake destroyed part of the cave and thus created an entrance. It is famous for its spectacular acoustics.

Cephalonia is the largest of the Ionian islands, a mountainous Greek island of white pebble beaches, caves, vineyards and the fir forests of Mount Ainos.

Cephalonia is the largest of the Ionian Islands, off Greece's west coast, a rugged island of limestone mountains, deep bays and olive groves. A strong earthquake in 1953 levelled most of its towns, and many were rebuilt in a plainer style; Fiskardo, in the north, was spared and keeps its Venetian-style houses around a small harbour. Argostoli, the capital, has a long waterfront and a stone causeway bridge across its lagoon.
