The old town encompasses 14th-century buildings, a previous Jewish quarter, defensive and military structures against the Moors during the Dark Ages, and much more. The old centre has pedestrian streets, squares and the Arco da Porta Nova, a baroque gateway; the Biscainhos Museum is set in an eighteenth-century palace, and the Santa Bárbara garden has neat hedges and flowerbeds.
