  1. As the majestic main entrance to this UNESCO World Heritage site, Sakuramon-bashi is a faithful recreation of the original wooden bridge that once welcomed samurai into the castle grounds. Crossing this bridge offers a breathtaking first view of the "White Heron Castle" reflecting in the moat, serving as a symbolic transition from the modern world into the historic heart of Japan’s feudal past.

  3. Located within the castle grounds, this well is the setting for "Banshu Sarayashiki," one of Japan’s most famous ghost stories. Legend has it that a beautiful servant named Okiku was framed for losing a precious family plate and thrown into this well, where her spirit is said to return each night to mournfully count her missing treasures. It remains a fascinating stop for those intrigued by the eerie folklore and dramatic history hidden behind the castle’s elegant walls.

About Himeji

Himeji is a castle city in Hyogo Prefecture, Japan, dominated by Himeji Castle, a white-walled early seventeenth-century fortress known as the White Heron.

Himeji Castle stands on a low hill above the city's main street, its white plastered walls and layered roofs giving it the name White Heron Castle. The great keep was completed in the early seventeenth century and has come through wars, fires and earthquakes, which is why it was one of the first sites in Japan to be listed by UNESCO. Inside, steep wooden stairs climb through floors of heavy beams to a lookout over the rooftops.
