About Swakopmund
Swakopmund is a German-founded seaside town on Namibia's Atlantic coast, set between the cold ocean and the dunes of the Namib Desert.
Swakopmund was founded in 1892 as the main port of German South West Africa, and its centre still has half-timbered houses, a lighthouse and colonial buildings such as the Woermann House with its tower. A long jetty reaches into the cold Atlantic, palm-lined avenues run inland, and cafés serve German cake and coffee. The cold Benguela Current brings sea fog to the shore, so mornings are often grey even when the desert beyond is hot.
Top-ranked sights in Swakopmund: Cape Cross, Swakopmund Jetty, Namib-Naukluft National Park.
