Windhoek lies about 1,650 metres above sea level in the middle of Namibia, ringed by hills and thorn bush. It began as a German colonial post in the 1890s, and the Christuskirche, a Lutheran church of 1910 in pale sandstone, and the Alte Feste, an old fort that is now a museum, recall that period. The Tintenpalast, the seat of parliament, stands in a garden, and Independence Avenue runs through the centre.
Fragments of the Gibeon meteorite are displayed in the Post Street Mall, and the Namibia Craft Centre sells baskets, carvings and jewellery. Katutura, the large township, has markets where meat is grilled over open fires. Daan Viljoen Game Park, in the hills west of town, has oryx, kudu and zebra. Etosha lies roughly four hundred kilometres north, the dunes of Sossusvlei to the south-west, and Swakopmund on the coast to the west.
German bakeries serve coffee and cake, and local beer is brewed to the German purity law. Game meat is a speciality, from kudu and oryx to springbok, along with biltong, dried cured meat, and the braai, the open-fire barbecue. Rain falls in short bursts from November to March, and the dry, sunny winter has cold nights.
