Walvis Bay is Namibia's main port, set on a sheltered bay with a lagoon where large flocks of flamingos and pelicans feed, and desert dunes begin at the edge of town. Cold water from the Benguela Current brings fog and a cool, dry climate, and rain is rare. South Africa administered the town until 1994, when it became part of Namibia.

Boat trips go to Pelican Point, a long sand spit with a lighthouse and a colony of thousands of Cape fur seals, with dolphins alongside, and whales are sometimes seen offshore in the cooler months. To the south, Sandwich Harbour is where dunes drop straight into the sea, and Dune 7, a tall dune east of town, can be climbed. Swakopmund, a German-style seaside town, is a short drive north.

Oysters grown in the bay are the local speciality, served beside kingklip, kabeljou and other Atlantic fish, with game meat such as oryx and kudu on many menus. German bakeries add pastries and cake. The coast stays cool even in summer, often under morning mist.
