2I felt mislead.
Should know it takes 45 minutes to get to the glacier and an additional 15 minute walk with crampons. Folks having had knee replacement surgery may make a different choice. Travelers should know Katla ice cave is better identified as an indention with blue ice. Photos on web site not indicative of current state.
5Unforgettable Ice Cave Tour
Had an amazing time and Hawk was an awesome guide - he mixed in geological information with the history of Iceland and Vik, along with great tunes on the ride. Didn’t even need to rent large boots - our Keens hiking shoes worked great with the crampons.
5BOOK it now guys, thank me later!
Fantastic experience, really organised and very fun! Our guide Hawk (can’t say his real name in Icelandic) was incredible, brains and beauty!!! Highly experienced very informative and really funny! We felt very lucky to have him as our guide and would definite recommend the tour too, small group easy walk and very beautiful to be on the glacier.
3Not as expected
Disappointed. I have a bad back and I asked how difficult it was to get to the cave and the person said it was easy just a ride there was rough. Easy? It was a 45 minute to an hour hike up a hill on uneven terrain. I got up halfway I couldn’t make it any further. Told Ari, the guy that I had to go back down I went back down by myself a lot of the planks were broken, so went off the path and ended up into the quicksand or whatever it is down about 10 inches on one leg You should really tell people when there’s a dee climb like that. My friend was disappointed because the cave was almost melted. Big waste of money for me.
5A Must Do Tour!
The answer is yes, yes the Ice Cave by Katla Volcano is definitely worth visiting! We would say that the entire experience from the jeep ride to walking up to the glacier and taking in the stunning scenery makes the excursion worth it. Plus our guide, Hawk, was fantastic. He was funny and extremely knowledgeable. We enjoyed learning more about the glacier & the whole volcanic area. We also never felt rushed and he took great pics, too. In addition, we really enjoyed his music selection for the roundtrip drive! This is a tour that is a definite must if you are in Vik! It's also nice to leave the driving in capable hands!
