Vík í Mýrdal is the southernmost village on the Icelandic mainland, set on a green slope above a long beach, with a small red-roofed church on the hill. The Mýrdalsjökull ice cap, which covers the Katla volcano, fills the horizon to the north, and the sea stacks of Reynisdrangar rise out of the water off the beach.

Reynisfjara, a beach of black volcanic sand, has columns of basalt, a cave and heavy surf. Nearby Dyrhólaey, a promontory pierced by an arch, is a nesting place for puffins in summer. West along the ring road lie Skógafoss and Seljalandsfoss, two of Iceland's best-known waterfalls, and the Sólheimajökull glacier tongue. To the east spreads the Eldhraun lava field, covered in thick moss.

Icelandic lamb soup, fresh fish and skyr are served in the village's cafés, with strong coffee to follow. The coast is one of the wetter parts of Iceland, and mist often hides the mountains. Light changes the mood of the year, with midnight sun in June and northern lights in winter.
