Akureyri lies at the head of Eyjafjörður, one of the longest fjords in Iceland, with snowy mountains rising on both sides. It is the largest town in the north and is often called the capital of North Iceland. The Akureyri Church, a stark concrete building designed by Guðjón Samúelsson, stands on a hill above the centre at the top of a broad flight of steps, and the botanical garden is one of the most northerly in the world.
Goðafoss, the waterfall of the gods, lies on the road east towards Lake Mývatn, with its steaming craters, lava formations and geothermal baths, and Dettifoss and the Ásbyrgi canyon lie further along. Boats leave the fjord to look for whales, Hrísey is a quiet island a short ferry ride offshore, and the Hlíðarfjall ski area rises above the town in winter.
Arctic char, cod and haddock come straight from northern waters, and Icelandic lamb, skyr and dark rye bread round out the menus. At Mývatn the bread is baked in hot ground. In June the nights are never fully dark, and the northern lights appear on clear nights from autumn to spring.
